Follow These Tips to Forage for Amanita Muscaria Safely and Sustainably

Whether for personal use or for sale, people forage for Amanita Muscaria mushrooms every year. It is an enjoyable activity that starts as a walk in the woods and quickly turns into a treasure hunt. During these times, it’s important to remember the safety and sustainability practices adopted by experienced mushroom enthusiasts. Overharvesting Amanita Muscaria can be detrimental to the surrounding environment.
What is Amanita Muscaria?
The Amanita Muscaria, commonly known as fly agaric, is a mushroom that has been revered throughout history for its therapeutic and psychoactive properties. Tribes across Siberia, Scandinavia, and Russia were documented using this mushroom for centuries. Amanita Muscaria stands out boldly with a red cap covered in easily removed white warts. The cap can grow up to eight inches in diameter. It starts convex and flattens with age. The gills on the underside of the cap are white and free from the stem. The stem is white and can grow up to ¾ inch thick. Towards the bottom of the stem, the skirt is white and the base is swollen and shaggy. The entire mushroom can grow up to eight inches tall and has a mild and pleasant aroma and taste.
When and Where do Amanita Muscaria Grow?
The Amanita Muscaria mushroom primarily grows in temperate forests across North America, Northern Europe, and parts of Russia. However, these mushrooms have been found growing all over the world. They typically grow in the late summer into the autumn, but with climate change, this season could be extended slightly. Amanita Muscaria typically form symbiotic relationships (mycorrhizae) with living trees, particularly birch, pine, and spruce, and grow on the ground nearby Amanita Muscaria often form in what are called “fairy rings,” which are circular patterns of the mushroom. As a result, the mushroom’s spores expand outward in a radial pattern.
Tips for Foraging Amanita Muscaria
Learn Identifying Features: It is vital to ensure the mushroom meets all the criteria listed above, as several toxic mushrooms look very similar to Amanita Muscaria.
Proper Picking Technique: After correctly identifying the mushroom, remove it from the ground to preserve all the nutrients. When picking, hold them at the base and gently twist them to remove them from the ground. Do not grab the cap when picking. It will fall apart.
Don’t Pick Them All: Amanita muscaria plays a vital ecological role within the forest. Enough must be left behind to continue its life cycle. As a general rule, conscientious foragers only take a maximum of 30% of the mushrooms they find.

Preparing and Storing Amanita Muscaria
It is paramount to prepare or dry Amanita Muscaria as soon as possible. They do not keep well and can decay very quickly. They can be stored in a refrigerator, but only for a day or two, and they must be kept in a paper bag. Plastic will destroy them faster.
Drying Amanita mushrooms only takes a few hours in a dehydrator or oven. Start by cutting them into evenly sized pieces, discarding any pieces with decay. Then, spread them in a single layer in a dehydrator or a cookie sheet in an oven on low. If using an oven, leave the door open for air circulation. Once the mushrooms are cracker dry, place them in airtight jars and store them in a cool dark place.
